Prepare participants for your study.

The screener has a consent gate, screen-out rules and an attention check, and the decision study puts consent and a scored comprehension check before its task. The experience diary has none of these. Adapt the wording and rules to your study protocol, then test each path before recruiting.

What these share

What to consider before you send one.

Consent runs before the response exists

In the screener and the decision study, the gate is a pre-survey consent screen, not a first question: declining does not submit a response at all. That is the behaviour an ethics review asks about, and it is worth testing both paths before recruitment.

Write the exclusion rule down first

Attention checks, timing and straight-line flags are review aids. Decide what a failure means before you see the outcome, keep the original export, and report the rules beside the final sample size.

Test the panel round trip

Before recruiting through Prolific or Connect, test the qualified, screened-out and completed paths. Inspect the captured IDs in the export.
